Layla Smallwood

Education Program Manager

Layla Smallwood joined the ETHS staff and the education team as the Education Program Manager in 2021. She works directly with school groups for both in person and virtual school visits and programming. In addition to working with school programming, she will also be working directly with the ETHS education staff and the MTSU Center for Historic Preservation’s Teaching with Primary Sources team to serve educators in statewide workshops and professional development opportunities. Layla has a bachelor’s degree in history from Tennessee Technological University and a master's of education in curriculum and instruction with a focus on social studies education from Middle Tennessee State University. In addition to her work in historical preservation and museum education, Layla has taught social studies in Tennessee public schools. She is currently completing her Ph.D. in public history under the direction of Tennessee State Historian and Director of the MTSU Center for Historic Preservation, Dr. Carroll Van West. Her research interests include museum education and best practices, genocide, monuments and memorials, historic preservation, and public memory.
