This Day In East Tennessee History

April 18, 1862
On this day in 1862, Edmund Kirby Smith, leader of the Confederacy out of Knoxville, ordered Colonel John C. Vaughn, Confederate Brigadier General, to employ all his available cavalry in patrolling the area between Clinton, Tennessee, and "the north Valley of Powell's River," one of the major escape routes of men from East Tennessee heading to Kentucky.
